Being married to a very handy man has big advantages. My hubby is a carpenter and can do amazing things with a piece of wood. (keep it clean folks!) He has also saved us LOADS of money since becoming homeowners. I have learned valuable home improvement project lessons because of him and absolutely love most of our experiments.
I've been with Brad for going on 8 years. In this time he has been a carpenter pretty much the entire time of our courtship and thereafter. This means I spent A LOT of time in Home Depot. I couldn't even begin to explain the disdain I had for the place back in the pre-homeownership days. I would have rather went to the dentist for a thorough teeth cleaning than look at tile samples or help him pick up drywall for a side job.
On October 1st 2008 this all changed. I remember our first trip into "The Depot" as it's fondly referred to in our house. It smelled different, the atmosphere seemed different, and the lighting was perfect to showcase items I HAD to have. They were all light up screaming BUY ME!
Beautiful things I could purchase to make OUR house better. Our blood, sweat, and tears could create something amazing in place of our old lavender kitchen. (Yes, we seriously had a lavender kitchen when we moved in!) It wasn't just paint but tile, light fixtures, and new hardware for sinks & cabinets were all sparkling to me more than any diamond in any jewelry store ever could. (Ok who am I kidding; diamonds are still a girl's best friend!)
Last Saturday, my husband and I spent 3 hours looking at things like crown molding, sink hardware, and possible counter top selections. It was one of the best dates we've had a in a long time. I know it sounds so nerdy, but we were bonding over creating something that was OURS. We've got a long way to go on our "not so little" house in farm country but to dream together of the possibilities we could create with a little sweat equity and help from "The Depot" gave me a new found love affair with a place I used to despise.
